Starting Point Outreach for Women was established in September 2012 by Angel and Myrick Chumbler and is headed by Directors of Operations LeAnn Cornelius and Melissa Wood.
Our mission is to help connect women with the life changing spiritual principles of recovery. We assist women who are recovering from substance use disorder by providing a safe, affordable, structured, supervised sober living environment. We promote a peer support atmosphere where the residents help one another in their journey towards long term sobriety. Our Certified Peer Support Specialists provide many support services to the residents.
Our goal is to support all residents as they embark on this new adventure of learning how to start living life instead of just fighting to survive. Residents will gain all the knowledge they need to practice a new way of living so they can have successful long-term sobriety and become life changing members of our communities by using their experience, strength and hope to change the world one day at a time.
Starting Point Outreach is certified by the Alabama Alliance for Recovery Residences (AARR) and serves the recovery community by offering many different peer support services, including but not limited to 24 hour a day on-site available Peer Support Specialists. Each resident has an assigned Certified Peer Support Specialist where she develops a partnership built on trust. These relationships allow the residents to learn structure, accountability, and other skills necessary for a recovery-oriented life. Each resident meets with their Certified Peer Support Specialist weekly to monitor progress on her recovery goals and assist with any issues that the resident may be experiencing.
Our services are individualized and tailored to each residents’ needs, maintaining referrals and resources necessary to support sustainable recovery solutions. We perform frequent, random drug/alcohol screenings and engage in Court and Peer Support Advocacy.
Starting Point Outreach is a three-phase program. Phase One includes an intensive recovery plan where certain goals are identified, and residents begin working towards accomplishing these goals with their peer support specialist. Phase Two is still structured but provides more freedom in support of an independent recovery oriented lifestyle. Phase Three is Graduate Status. Which includes housing, peer support, random drug and alcohol screening, maintaining a recovery-oriented lifestyle, as well as required once weekly peer support after care meetings, and chairing meetings for the newcomers to share their experience, strength, and hope.
Starting Point Outreach prides itself in Life Development Skills for our residents including employment guidance, educational and certification opportunities, transportation, daily schedule and planning, in-house support groups, and outside support groups. External resources include but are not limited to parenting classes, trauma therapy, anger management, grief counseling, substance abuse counseling, mental health treatment.
Our wish is and will always be to show our community love and hope for a better future. To learn more about our mission, please visit www.startingpointoutreach.org or visit us on Facebook under Starting Point Outreach for Women.
